If you or a loved one is out on bail, and you skip a court date appearance, this can be a very serious matter and should not be taken lightly. Almost immediately, the court will issue a warrant of arrest, and there will most likely be no eligibility to be bailed out. If the thought has crossed your head, consider it again. This will make your situation a whole lot worse, and you won’t get far.
Unfortunately, there are some people who do skip bail. They skip bail, even though their family members and/or loved ones bailed them out, in the hopes that the defendant would keep his/her life together by still working and taking care of their family business instead of being behind bars. If this happens and you are involved, keep a few things in mind:
Do not assist or harbor those who skip bail.
Most people that skip bail will most likely ask their family and/or friends to help or harbor them. Keep in mind that this itself, is a crime and you now become subject to criminal arrest. The person asking you to harbor him/her is not asking a small favor but is rather asking you to risk going to jail. Don’t jeopardize your life now and risk being in a really bad situation.
Speak to the Bail Bondsman
If the defendant skips out on their court date, the bail bondsman is going to face financial liability. You’ll want to make sure that you are not pulled into this financial situation, and that the bail bonds company does not associate you with this financial issue. The easiest way to do this is to immediately contact the bail bonds company, and let them know any information regarding the defendant’s whereabouts and any other information.
If you bail someone out of jail and that person skips out on bail, the police and bail bonds company will be searching for that person, and they may pay you a visit to ask questions. Remember, if you don’t know where that person is and are not harboring him/her, then you are doing nothing wrong. But if you do harbor a person that has skipped bail, you can very well find yourself behind bars, and in need of a bail bondsman.
Be safe and make the right choice. Doing it wrong is what landed you in the situation you are today, do not repeat and make things worse, start yourself on the right path again.
